The family file
Joseph R. Gannascoli
Brooklyn-born chef. Sopranos capo. Jimbo family.
You know him as Vito Spatafore on HBO’s The Sopranos. Before that he was a self-taught chef with his own Brooklyn restaurant. Today he’s the official spokesperson and marketing partner for Jimbo & Company Transport. Here’s the whole story.
Joseph R. Gannascoli was born on February 15, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the Gravesend neighborhood. His Italian-American parents shaped his work ethic early: his mother was a seamstress and his father was a jeweler.
He lost his mother when he was 19. After Lafayette High School, he spent two years at St. John’s University studying communications.
Joe found his first calling in kitchens, not on camera. While working in the men’s department at Lord & Taylor, he befriended the store’s executive chef, who invited him to work at a restaurant in midtown Manhattan.
He taught himself to cook, starting at Manhattan Market in 1981 and moving on to Commander’s Palace in New Orleans and kitchens in Boston and Los Angeles. Back in Brooklyn he opened his own restaurant, Soup As Art.
Back in New York at 24 and cooking full time, Joe got a push from actor friend Tim Kelleher, who suggested he audition for a play he was producing, The Juiceman. That play gave him the acting bug.
He studied acting with Bob Patterson and took small parts while keeping his chef job, with film credits including Money for Nothing (1993) and Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).
In Season 1 of HBO’s The Sopranos, Joe appeared as a bakery customer. In Season 2 he came back as a completely different character: Vito Spatafore, a loyal soldier in Ralph Cifaretto’s crew.
Playing two roles on the same acclaimed series is rare. Vito rose to capo and carried a major storyline in the sixth and final season, making him one of the most talked-about characters on television.
Joe combined his two worlds in A Meal to Die For: A Culinary Novel of Crime, a co-authored novel about a mobster and gourmet chef summoned to cook a feast for a boss who is about to go to jail. The book includes recipes.
He kept acting after The Sopranos, with credits including Men in Black 3 (2012) and An Act of War (2015). As of 2024, he lived on Long Island, worked mainly as a private chef, and made celebrity appearances for fans.
Joe married Diana Benincasa on June 11, 2005. That August, the couple moved into the first house he had ever owned, after he gave up the rent-controlled Bay Ridge apartment he had lived in for 25 years.
His story is rooted in an Italian-American Brooklyn family: a seamstress mother, a jeweler father, and a kitchen where a love of food began. That same sense of family is why the Jimbo partnership fits.
On December 22, 2025, Jimbo & Company Transport announced Joe as its official spokesperson and marketing partner. WNDU 16 News reported that the deal was finalized at Slow Burn Cigar & Whiskey Lounge in Middlebury, where he met with COO Jourdan Hansen.
“We hit it off because he is such a big fan,” Joe told WNDU. Since then he has represented Jimbo in the community, including the BBQ Brew Fest at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Elkhart County.
Ask Jimbo is the AI assistant created to support the Jimbo legacy. It launched as JRT, named after James Richard Thatcher, the grandfather of the Hansen family, and it still carries forward the values and leadership lessons he passed down through generations.
